Overview

OVERVIEW

At the close of 2013, NCF’s capacity was 835 adult male inmates. Capacity at the main-custody compound was 707 adult male inmates, with 539 medium-security beds and 168 minimum-security beds. NCF’s satellite unit at Stockton had a capacity of 128 minimum-security beds.

As with other facilities under the management of the Secretary of Corrections, education, health services and food services are provided through contracts with private vendors.

  • Building Maintenance

  • Carpentry

  • Medium Vocations (manufacturing skills)

Academic Education Classes
  • Offered by staff from Colby Community College

  • Includes reading, writing, science, and math

  • Prepares residents for GED testing

Employment Skills Development
  • Community service work

  • Participation in prison-based and non-prison-based private industries programs, such as Wilkens at Stockton, KS, fostering employment skills and work ethic

Health Services
  • Physical and Behavioral Health services available to residents

Resident Programs
  • Self-help programs such as Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous

  • RADAC Substance Abuse Program for minimum and medium custody residents

    • 39-session Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Substance Abuse curriculum

    • Modules include Motivational Engagement, Cognitive Restructuring, Emotional Regulation, Social Skills, Problem Solving, and Relapse Prevention

Behavioral Health Department
  • Provides individual and group therapy covering various areas including anger management, dialectical behavior therapy, Fundamental Lessons in Psychology, lifestyle change, relationships, and parenting.

Community Partnership Program
  • Partners with Second Chance Homeless Pet Society for basic dog obedience training and grooming for dogs placed up for adoption upon completion of the program.

Highway 36 Shopping

Norton’s two business districts provide great opportunities for retail therapy. The businesses on U.S. Highway 36 include 2 ranch and farm supply stores, a discount store, three convenience stores, a florist/gift shop, and an appliance & hardware store. Just a few blocks north on Highway 283 is a large furniture store.

Downtown Shopping

This area was Norton’s original business district and many of the buildings from the turn of the century have been or are in the process of being restored. Many new and unique destination businesses have located here in the last few years. You’ll find a gourmet kitchen store that also serves an excellent lunch, Mexican and Chinese restaurants, a coffee shop, a quilt shop, a pharmacy and gift shop, a clothing store, a grocery store, and a cultural arts center.

Keith Sebelius Reservoir / Prairie Dog State Park

Norton County is the home of Keith Sebelius Reservoir and Prairie Dog State Park located just 4 miles west of Norton. This lake is the number one fishing lake in Kansas. The reservoir is a man-made lake with approximately 2,500 surface acres of water and is known for its large numbers of trophy wipers, a white bass/striped bass hybrid known for its ferocious fighting ability, walleye, Saugeye, and many other varieties.

Prairie Dog State Park has a wide variety of camping sites ranging from recreational vehicles to primitive, as well as several cabins.

Norton Elmwood Park

Elmwood Park hosts a variety of activities, such as disc golf, dirt track car races, Norton County Horse Council Events, the Norton Community School’s football stadium and playground equipment for kids.  The park is also home to the Norton Home Owned Carnival each July.
